Paige Party Palooza

Phase 2 of the celebratory weekend was Paige's birthday bash. She requested a small and fun party, much like last year. We did a fire pit in the backyard (enjoying the awesome landscape and ambiance!) and roasted hot dogs. She also requested smack-a-roni, grandpa beans and s'mores. No fancy games other than dads chasing kids and ghost in the graveyard. Not hard at all!

The only thing that was a bit challenging was the cake. She requested a Pinterest worthy unicorn cake. Anna and I were up for the task, but it almost killed us! I decided to make it a bit easier by using box funfetti mix. Well, I forgot that box mixes are really delicate and don't hold their shape well which is necessary when applying homemade buttercream. Fortunately, frosting is a lot like Spackle and can cover mistakes, but it was tough getting a good crumb coat and we ended up with about 7 batches of buttercream! Once we got the whole thing coated, we worked on the mane. Let's just say they make the multi-color technique look easy, but IT IS NOT! We finally got something going and in the end it turned out great. Best $10 spent? The unicorn horn, ears and eye lashes which were a kit from amazon made of polymer clay. Fortunately, it was a hit!

The party was also a hit. The kids loved their jock jams, glow stick dance party....otherwise known as a junior rave. Paige received three notebooks which cracked us up because this kid loves to write and her friends know her well. All in all, it was a great celebration. Phase 2, check!
